Happy International Women's Day!

Today (March 8th) is International Women’s Day! International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organisation-specific.

I decided to start what I hope is the first of many traditions to celebrate the women that we’re empowering together at Shakti.ism, and sent my fabulous Pondicherry tailoring team for a day out. The ladies took the afternoon off and went to see a Tamil film called Draupathi, that’s, coincidentally all about a strong woman, and then I treated them to a team lunch. The only downside was that I wasn’t there to join them, but we managed to have a lovely video call to say Happy Women’s Day after the event so I could tell the team how proud I am of every single thing they are achieving! I truly hope this is only the beginning of the things we will achieve together, and that we are just getting started. I also plan to make this an annual tradition for International Women’s Day for all the empowered women being impacted for the better by Shakti.ism. I am committed to regularly recognising and celebrating their successes throughout our journey together as well.

An equal world is an enabled world.

How will you help forge a gender-equal world?
Here are some ideas for you to celebrate International Women’s Day today (and everyday!): Celebrate women’s achievements. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.

*If you’re interested in making a donation to support the empowerment and employment of the team in Pondicherry and in other groups across India, please consider making a pledge here. It doesn’t take much effort to make a big impact, so absolutely any contributions will be put to good use and will be very much appreciated. Thank you!
