Breaking Barriers: How an Artisan is Reclaiming the Timeless Technique of Block Printing for Women
Behind every Shakti.ism piece lies the story of an artisan whose hands have helped reshape tradition and in doing so, reshaped her own life. For seven years, this incredible artisan woman has brought intricate block‐printing to vibrant life, defying expectations in a craft once reserved for men.
“Here, women are getting the opportunity to do this work,” she explains. “We are in no way behind men.”
That simple declaration of equality carries the weight of her journey from a place where stepping outside the home for employment was once unthinkable, to a workshop where her skills and creativity flourish enabling her to put food on her family’s table.
Every day, she experiments with new colours and block designs, inspired by the company of fellow women artisans. “Working alongside other women like me inspires me, and the environment encourages my creativity,” she says. It is in that supportive circle that she found not only her talent, but her voice.
She remembers the first time a buyer praised the fabrics she printed and shipped abroad: “When the fabrics I have printed reach far‑off places and I receive appreciation for them, it makes me feel good.” Such moments affirm her belief that this craft and the women who sustain it deserve global recognition.
Through her skill, she and her husband now share equally in household expenses, and she looks forward with hope.
“In the future, I want to continue working here and learning more and more, build my own house, and see my children married,” she shares. Her ambitions go beyond herself, promising stability and dignity for her family.
